MCC Training : Multi Crew Coordination

MCC training: Definition

As part of their initial training, student pilots primarily train as Pilot in command (PIC), assuming all the responsibilities associated with this role. However, the reality of commercial flights often requires smooth coordination among multiple crew members. This is where MCC (Multi Crew Cooperation) training comes into play. Its goal is to establish a clear distribution of roles and tasks during a flight in a multi-pilot configuration, facilitating harmonious and effective cooperation among crew members.

During MCC training, pilots learn to work in cooperatively and share flight responsibilities. They practice effectively managing the distribution of tasks between the Pilot Flying (PF) and the Pilot Monitoring (PM).

If you are looking to pursue this training optimally, please note that we offer it exclusively in Perpignan, in a face-to-face format. Learning takes place using our ALSIM ALX simulator, a state-of-the-art tool that faithfully reproduces the flight conditions of a medium jet, providing an engaging and realistic experience for our students.

The different types of MCC

Entering the world of aviation and becoming an airline pilot requires specialized training. Among the crucial steps in this training is MCC (Multi Crew Cooperation). But what is MCC, and why is it so vital?

MCC-JOC

The MCC training primarily aims to prepare pilots for crew operations, which is a regulatory requirement for public transport of passengers that mandates the presence of two pilots on board. This is an important transition for aspiring pilots who previously flew solo. They must now learn to collaborate, delegate, and share flight responsibilities between the PF (Pilot Flying) and the PM (Pilot Monitoring).

The PF is responsible for flying and navigation, while the PM manages the aircraft’s parameters and communicates with air traffic control. This organization is complex and differs greatly from public misconceptions.

The JOC (Jet Orientation Course) variant is specific to jet aircraft. It is a highly valued complement by airlines. At Aéropyrénées, we offer the MCC-JOC training on our ALSIM ALX simulator based in Perpignan, which simulates a medium-haul jet aircraft.

MCC-APS

Aéropyrénées, a recognized school in Europe for aeronautical training, is proud to collaborate with our partners, SKY4u in Berlin and Airline Flight Academy in Dublin, to offer you an exclusive training program: MCC-APS, specifically designed for the mentored program of a specific airline.

Evolution of the regulations: PF pilot flying / PM Pilot Monitoring

The ultimate goal of MCC (Multi Crew Cooperation) training is to ensure the safety and efficiency of flight operations. Coordination among crew members is essential for effective workload management during flights, responding to emergency situations, and maintaining effective communication with air traffic control.

The MCC training program is regulated by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and concludes with the attainment of an internationally recognized MCC qualification. This qualification is a prerequisite for obtaining an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), which allows one to pilot commercial aircraft.

In summary, MCC training is an essential step for any pilot aspiring to a career in commercial aviation. It reinforces the foundational skills acquired during CPL , IR, and MEP training by adding a crucial teamwork dimension to the safe and efficient management of commercial flights. At Aéropyrénées, we offer high-level MCC training, led by experienced instructors dedicated to the success of each trainee pilot.

Training content

The primary objective of MCC (Multi Crew Cooperation) training is to prepare pilots to work effectively as integral members of a cockpit team. To achieve this goal, the MCC training at Aéropyrénées covers a variety of theoretical and practical modules.

Theoretical Module

The theoretical part of the MCC training includes several essential topics for teamwork in the cockpit. Among these topics are:

  • Crew Resource Management (CRM): Pilots learn the principles of communication, leadership, decision-making, and stress management in the cockpit.
  • Flight Operations: Trainees deepen their understanding of flight operations, including takeoff, landing, and emergency procedures.
  • Crew Performance: This module covers human factors that can affect crew performance, such as fatigue, workload, and stress.
  • Introduction to Jet Aircraft: An introduction to the characteristics and operations of jet aircraft, which are typically flown by multi-pilot crews.

Practical Module

The practical part of the MCC training takes place in a flight simulator. Pilots have the opportunity to practice the skills acquired during the theoretical courses. This experience is essential for developing real crew management proficiency. Practical aspects include:

  • Flight Scenarios: Trainee pilots conduct flights from origin to destination, managing all phases of flight, including takeoffs, landings, night flights, and emergency procedures.
  • Crew Management: Trainees practice distributing and alternating the roles of PF (Pilot Flying) and PNF (Pilot Not Flying) during the flight, optimizing teamwork and coordination.
  • Use of Aircraft Systems: Trainees learn to effectively use the complex systems of a jet aircraft, including navigation and automation systems.

Once the theoretical and practical modules are successfully completed, pilots receive their MCC qualification, validated by an authorized examiner. This qualification is an important step toward obtaining an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL).

Ultimately, the MCC training at Aéropyrénées is designed to transform individual pilots into effective members of a cockpit team. Through a rigorous training program and guidance from experienced instructors, our trainees acquire the skills necessary to succeed in the demanding world of commercial aviation.

What are the eligibility criteria?

To be eligible for the MCC training at Aéropyrénées, candidates must meet a specific set of criteria. These eligibility requirements ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge necessary to understand the course material, as well as the basic flight skills that can be refined during training. Here are the prerequisites to enter our MCC training program:

Candidates must hold a pilot license: To be eligible for MCC training, candidates must possess either a CPL (Commercial Pilot License) or an ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot License). The CPL must be accompanied by an Instrument Rating (IR).

  • Flight hours: Candidates must have accumulated a minimum number of flight hours as defined by civil aviation regulations. While there may be some flexibility in this area, generally, obtaining the CPL requires a minimum of 200 flight hours.
  • Medical certificate: Pilots must hold a Class 1 medical certificate, proving that they are in good physical and mental health to fly.
  • Age: Candidates for the MCC training must be at least 18 years old.
  • Language skills: Candidates must demonstrate the ability to communicate in English, the international language of aviation. A minimum level of 4 on the ICAO scale is typically required.

It is important to note that these criteria represent the minimum entry requirements. At Aéropyrénées, we encourage all interested candidates to discuss their qualifications and career goals with our instructors before applying, in order to determine the best training pathway for their specific needs.

In conclusion, MCC training is an essential step in the journey of any pilot aspiring to a career in commercial aviation. It prepares pilots to work as a team in a multi-pilot cockpit environment, focusing on skills such as communication, decision-making, and stress management. With MCC training from Aéropyrénées, you are one step closer to your goal of becoming a professional airline pilot, ready to take on the responsibilities of a multi-pilot cockpit environment.
