Instructor Training & Qualifications

DGAC certified training – RS5621 register (publication: 11/25/2021 & RNCP deadline: 12/31/2026)

FI – CRI – IRI – MCCI

In EASA member countries, the instructor condition is a qualification that is added to a license.

To provide training, an instructor must have at least the qualification for which they can instruct, of course, currently valid.

European rules distinguish several instructor qualifications:

  • FI (Flight Instructor): flight instructor
  • IRI (Instrument Rating Instructor): instrument rating instructor
  • CRI (Class Rating Instructor): class rating instructor
  • MCCI (Multi Crew Cooperation Instructor): multi-crew cooperation instructor

The AIR CREW (or Flight Crew Licensing) regulations provide multiple pathways to instructor qualifications, with the recommended starting point being the Flight Instructor (FI) qualification. Pilots undergoing this type of training receive a solid foundation in pedagogical psychology from our team. This will serve them throughout their careers, including when they progress to other roles and instructor qualifications.

FI(a) Training – Flight Instructor

The FI(A) training is an ideal bridge to the professional world. As an instructor within a flying club or training center, you will quickly accumulate flight hours. Subsequently, you will be able to meet the prerequisites for positions in the aviation industry and airlines that are hiring. Additionally, with experience, you can later progress to qualifications such as CRI, IRI, or even examiner.

An FI(A) instructor qualification allows you to provide flight instruction for Private Pilot Licenses (PPL) or Commercial Pilot Licenses (CPL).

The instructor must have a thorough knowledge of:

  • the relevant regulations;
  • the taught programs;
  • different teaching methods;
  • practical exercises for the student pilot.

There is a program tailored for holders of a military FI(A).

FI(A) – Prerequisites

  • Hold at least a CPL(A); Or

  • Hold at least a PPL(A) and have:

    ° Except for FI(A) instructors providing training for the LAPL(A) only, passed the theoretical knowledge exam for the CPL, which can be taken without completing a theoretical training course for the CPL and will not be valid for the issuance of a CPL;

° And Completed at least 200 hours of flight time in airplanes or TMG ( touring Motor Glider ) including 150 hours as PIC.

  • Have completed at least 30 hours on single-engine piston aircraft, of which at least 5 hours must have been completed during the 6 months preceding the pre-entry flight.

  • Have completed 1 VFR flight in the countryside as PIC, including 1 flight of at least 540 km (300 NM) during which full-stop landings must be made at 2 different airfields.

  • Candidates for the FI qualification must have passed a specific pre-entry flight test with a qualified FI.

FI(A) – In detail

  • Theoretical courses & Psycho-Pedagogy: 125 Hours

  • Dual flight – CAP 10 (spins / aerobatics): 1 hour

  • Dual flight – single engine – SEP: 19 hours

  • Mutual solo flight – single-engine – SEP: 5 hours.

  • FNPT II simulator: 5 hours

  • Acting in front of an audience

FI(A) adapted military – Prerequisites

  • 500 hours of flight as an aircraft pilot

  • Have held a military authorization to provide night flight instruction or a military night flight qualification

  • 200 hours of flight instruction within training schools preparing for:

    • A military pilot license & having supervised 25 solo flights as a flight instructor.
    • A military single-pilot qualification (QC) or type rating (QT).
    • A military multi-pilot transport qualification (QT), with a maximum of 100 hours completed on a Full Flight Simulator (FFS).
    • A military fighter qualification (QT).

FI(A) adapted military – In detail

  • Theoretical courses (human factor, psycho-pedagogy, briefings): 6 hours

  • Dual flight – single engine – SEP: 3 Hours

*The FI(A) night flight qualification is also recommended to enhance your skill set.

CRI – Class Rating Instructor training

The CRI (Class Rating Instructor) qualification allows for the training necessary to issue a class rating for single-pilot airplanes. The holder can instruct on single-engine or multi-engine aircraft, provided they are appropriately qualified.

It also enables the instructor to provide the required training for multi-crew operations on aircraft with ten passengers or more, or on multi-engine aircraft, provided they have completed at least 1,500 hours of flight time in multi-pilot operations on that type of aircraft.

The CRI extension is a class qualification accessible for:

  • CRI-SET (single-engine turbine)
  • CRI-MEP (multi-engine piston)
  • CRI-MET (multi-engine turbine)

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age: 18 years

  • Have passed the pre-admission test – theoretical and practical assessment

  • 30 hours of flight as PIC (Pilot in Command) on the applicable class or type of aircraft.

  • 500 total flight hours (A)

In detail

  • Educational psychology: 25 hours.

  • Ground course + briefing/debriefing: 25 hours

  • Flight: 5 hours

  • Flight test: 1 hour

  • If you are already FI, no educational psychology

IRI(A) Training – Instrument Rating Instructor

An IRI(A) instructor qualification allows for the acquisition of instrument flight instruction skills.

This will enable the trainee to provide flight instruction for private pilot licenses (PPL) or commercial pilot licenses (CPL) on IR qualifications.

Aéropyrénées offers two types of courses: FI IRI(A) or IRI(A) alone.

The IRI(A) does not require the FI(A) qualification. It can be pursued as part of an already established career, such as in an airline. The prerequisites are more demanding than those for the FI IRI(A).

The FI IRI(A) follows a FI course completed at an ATO. The program is faster due to prior instructional experience and does not require a psycho-pedagogical course, as it has already been completed.

IRI(A) – Prerequisites

  • Minimum age: 18 years

  • Have passed the pre-admission test – theoretical and practical assessment

  • Hold a CPL(A) with 200 hours of flight time, including 150 hours as PIC (Pilot in Command).

  • 30 hours on SEP, including at least 5 hours in the 6 months preceding the admission flight.

  • 10 hours of instrument flight training

  • 20 hours of flying in the cross-country as Pilot in Command.

  • Hold the theoretical CPL or the theoretical ATPL

  • 800 hours of IFR, including 400 hours that can be completed on a simulator.

IRI(A) – In detail

  • Psycho-pedagogy: 25 hours

  • Ground course: 10 hours

  • FNPT II simulator: 8 hours

  • Single-engine flight: 2 hours

FI IRI(A) – Prerequisites

  • Minimum age: 18 years

  • Have passed the pre-admission test – theoretical and practical assessment

  • Hold the theoretical CPL or the theoretical ATPL

  • Hold the CPL(A) with 200 flight hours including 150 hours as CDB as well as an unrestricted FI(A) qualification

  • 30 hours on SEP including at least 5 hours in the 6 months preceding the admission flight

  • 10 hours of instrument flight training

  • 20 hours of cross-country flying as Pilot in Command.

  • 200 hours of IFR flight, of which 50 may be completed on a simulator.

FI IRI(A) – In detail

  • Ground course: 7 hours

  • FNPT II simulator: 4 hours

  • Single-engine flight: 1 hour

MCCI (Multi Crew Cooperation Instructor)

The MCCI (Multi Crew Cooperation Instructor) training equips you to instruct MCC training, which is typically offered at the end of an Airline Pilot Training Program.

The primary objective of the MCCI- Multi Crew Cooperation Instructor training course is to train you in the coordination of a two-pilot crew. Under the supervision of a qualified instructor, you will learn to conduct MCC sessions and manage the associated environment (FNPT II) during scheduled flight training sessions.

The secondary objective is to master the processes outlined in the MCC Training Manual. This includes understanding and planning the pedagogical exercises defined within the instructor station.

Many companies already entrust us with their MCCI training
